Downtown Elementary School to Open at Emily Griffith Campus on April 9

Denver -- The Downtown Denver Expeditionary School (DDES) will make history this week as the first public elementary school to open in downtown Denver. DDES will open on Wednesday, April 9 at the Emily Griffith Campus, located at 1860 Lincoln St. The school first opened in August 2013 at its temporary location at Smedley Elementary in northwest Denver. DDES is moving to its permanent home at the Emily Griffith Campus and will occupy the first and second floors of the building. View a DPS Features video on the school and students’ move to downtown Denver.

Purchased by Denver Public Schools in December 2012, the Emily Griffith Campus will house two additional schools this fall – Emily Griffith High School and Emily Griffith Technical College. Denver Public Schools central school-support staff will also re-locate to the Emily Griffith Campus this spring and summer.

Media are invited to join DDES students, staff, families, and DPS Superintendent Tom Boasberg for an opening day ribbon cutting ceremony on Wednesday, April 9.

About the Emily Griffith Campus:

The 13-story building, located in the heart of downtown Denver, is named to honor of Emily Griffith, a legendary Denver woman who became an inspirational pioneer in education and community service. The Emily Griffith Campus will serve as the home of Emily Griffith Technical College, Emily Griffith High School, the Downtown Denver Expeditionary School, and the DPS School-Support Center. In addition to providing a modern, updated learning facility, the new Emily Griffith Campus will provide new opportunities for the students it serves. The Emily Griffith Technical College operates several student-run businesses—including a café, barber shop, and salon —which will benefit from upgraded facilities and a central location.

The first school to move to the Emily Griffith Campus is the Downtown Denver Expeditionary School, on April 9, 2014.

Emily Griffith Technical College and Emily Griffith High School are expected to open at the new campus in August for the start of school year 2014-2015. DPS staff will begin moving into the building this spring.

DPS purchased the building at 1860 Lincoln St. in December 2012. The purchase and move to the Emily Griffith Campus are being funded with proceeds from the sales of existing DPS properties, along with 2012 bond funds allocated for a new location for Emily Griffith Technical College and Emily Griffith High School.  The move and facility consolidation is expected to save DPS more than $5 million in operating costs over the next 10 years.
